Kensy and Autumn were turning in circles, trying to see if Max was on his way back at all. Anna and Curtis hadn’t returned yet either.

‘Hey, isn’t that Staffel over there?’ Autumn asked. It looked as if the driver was speaking to someone, though the other person was out of view around the side of a merchandise stand.

‘Come on,’ Kensy said. ‘Let’s go.’

The girls walked nonchalantly towards the stall. Once there, they began browsing the caps and T-shirts, hoping to catch a proper look at the pair.

Kensy ducked into one of the racks to hear Staffel better.

‘You do know that with her out of the way, you’d be world champion?’

The hidden man was speaking, but Kensy still couldn’t see him.

‘Of course,’ Staffel said. ‘But Tom is in charge of the team – she’s always going to be number one.’

‘Yes, that husband of hers is a problem,’ the other man said. ‘But maybe he doesn’t have to be.’

‘What are you suggesting?’ Staffel asked.

Autumn was hovering near her friend, pulling T-shirts in and out to try to get a look at the second speaker.

But the voices went to whispers.

‘Oh come on,’ Kensy muttered. She forged further into the rack and managed to get a side glimpse of the other fellow. But then – disaster. The hanging rail above her came loose and an avalanche of clothing rained down on the girl.

The two men scurried off, clearly not wanting to be implicated.

Seconds later, the stall holder was practically on top of Kensy, bellowing at her in Portuguese. ‘O que você está fazendo?’ the woman shouted while Kensy lay on the ground, trying to free herself from the tangle of fabric.

‘Lamentamos muito!’ Autumn replied, pulling the girl to her feet. Kensy shook off the clothes and flung the last jersey from her face.

‘You should probably secure those racks a little better,’ Kensy muttered in English.

‘And you should probably buy something for the trouble you caused,’ the stall holder replied, also in English, as she eyeballed the girls.

Kensy reluctantly paid for a Wolf Racing cap before she and Autumn hightailed it back to where they’d been waiting for the others.

‘Did you get a look at him?’ Autumn asked on the way.

Kensy nodded. ‘Only from the side. He had blond hair – curly, I think – and dark clothes.’

‘Well, you saw more than I did. Good job,’ Autumn said.
